The work of Veronika Kellndorfer is aimed at a revision of our narrow understanding of modern architecture: a phenomenon enabled by the persistence of a few period photographs and drawings. In her photographs of Mies van der Rohe’s New National Gallery in Berlin—printed on sheets of glass at a scale that makes them architectural—Kellndorfer exposes the gap between our idea of the building and its actuality. Her photographs of the empty gallery at the beginning of a process of restoration focus on its raw materiality; the original steel, glass, and stone coexist with the new stacks of materials waiting to be installed as well as with the dust and dirt of the construction site. In her documentation of change—when the building was simultaneously unravelling and becoming—Kellndorfer offers us new ways to understand and reconstruct the history of this body of work.

The biennial Make New History took place between September 16, 2017 and January 7, 2018. Over 100 firms and artists representing more than 20 countries around the world were selected by the 2017 Biennial Artistic Directors, Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee. The Chicago Architecture Biennial invites the public to engage with and think about architecture in new and unexpected ways, and to take part in a global discussion on the future of the field.

 

Veronika Kellndorfer zeigt neue Arbeiten zum Thema „Raum als urbaner Raum, Realraum und Raum als Fiktion“. Großformatige Glas-Arbeiten, die sie speziell für die Chicago Biennale geschaffen hat setzen Mies van der Rohes Nationalgalerie, kurz vor der Schließung und langjährigen Renovierung, in Szene.

 „Kellndorfer entlarvt die Leerstelle zwischen unserem geistigen Bild von dem Gebäude und seiner Aktualität in der Welt, heute. Ihre Photographien von dem leeren Gebäude am Beginn eines Prozesses von Renovierungsarbeiten zeigen die Nationalgalerie mit dem Fokus auf ihre Baumaterialien, die originalen Stahlrahmen, Fensterscheiben und Bodenplatten. Gleichzeitig schieben sich schon die Stapel der neuen Materialien, die darauf warten installiert zu werden, sowie Staub und Dreck der Bauarbeiten, ins Bild. In ihrem Porträt eines Augenblicks der Veränderung, in dem das Gebäude sich sowohl auflöst als auch neu entsteht, bietet uns Kellndorfer neue Wege an die besondere Geschichte dieses Werkkomplexes zu verstehen und zu rekonstruieren.
