Tropical Modernism: Lina Bo Bardi
July 8 - September 2, 2016
Tuesday - Saturday 10 - 5:30

Christopher Grimes Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new works by Veronika Kellndorfer.
This body of work stems from her 2015 solo exhibition at the Casa de Vidro in São Paulo, home of celebrated Italian-born Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi. During this time Kellndorfer also engaged with the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer and the gardens of Roberto Burle Marx, finding their approach to Brazilian Modernism nascent to a new scope of reference.

For Tropical ModernismLina Bo Bardi, Kellndorfer continues working in the process she developed in the early 1990s of silk-screening photographic images to highly reflective glass panels, fusing image to form. In the main gallery, Kellndorfer will show works pairing details of Bo Bardi’s iconic SESC Pompéia in São Paulo with an individual plant species found in the Royal Botanic Garden in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Like Bo Bardi, whose architecture explored reciprocity between the human and the built, Kellndorfer examines the dialog between the playfully Brutalist and culturally dynamic SESC Pompéia and the global selection of various plant species flourishing in Brazil. The South gallery will feature works referencing Bo Bardi’s architectural treasure: Tree House (Casa de Vidro), as well as the sculptures Casa de Vidro, Quadrado and Casa de Vidro, Triângulo.

Opening Reception: Friday July 8, 2016, 6-8PM

Veronika Kellndorfer participates at PIER24: Collected

May 2, 2016 - January 31, 2017

Collected—the eighth exhibition at Pier 24 Photography—brings together photographs from the Pilara Foundation and other Bay Area collections. Nine collectors were invited to select works from their holdings that reflect their interests in the medium. The exhibition thus offers a lens on various collecting approaches, with some collectors focusing on the work of particular artists or on specific art historical movements or themes, and others developing their own criteria, whether deliberately or unconsciously. .

Marcel Buehler, Hans Diernberger, Veronika Kellndorfer, Anna McCarthy, Hans-Christian Schink und David Zink-Yi

12. März – 16. April 2016

CINEMATIC FRAMING

The Lina Bo Bardi Institute invites to the public ceremony for the opening of the exhibition Cinematic Framing
curated by Tereza de Arruda

September 19 – december 14
11am to 2pm, followed by a talk
with the artist, the curator and the directors of the Lina Bo and PM Bardi Institute, Anna Carboncini and Renato Anelli

Casa de Vidro | Rua General Almério de Moura, 200 | Morumbi, São Paulo / SP, Brasil

Real space and image space are interrelated, Kellndorfer’s photograph Tree House shows the pattern of the building burnt as a silk-screen print in glass. This scenario is flanked by two sculptures - dichroitic glasses and a silk-screen print in glass - generating flickerings of light, complementary colors, reflections and shadows. “Lichtbilder” are evoked according to the movements of the viewer and the alterations of the natural light focusing on the cinematic aspect, the dialectics of filmic sequences and the distilled frame.

Gemeinsame Vortragsreihe - BAU|KUNST und spannweiten
Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden, Sächsische Akademie der Künste, Technische Universität Dresden

AB-BILDEN

Opening Fri July 17, 6.30 pm
July 17 – September 20
Grüntuch Ernst Lab, Auguststraße 11–13, 10117 Berlin

The exhibition room in room brings together positions from photography, architecture and installation in a negotiation of the view into, onto and through space. Here, space is explored as a variable perceptual factor, as an architectural marker, as a bodily experience, in all of its geometric flexibility.

The viewer’s uncertainty as to where the space of the artwork ends and where the exhibition space begins makes his/her own positioning an irritating and reflexively confusing undertaking. The localization of the subject becomes a key moment of the spatial experience.

In order to discuss the subject of the exhibition, there also will be theoretical talks and panels with Karsten Schubert (architect and author) and Stephan Günzel (cultural scientist), Marc Glöde (art historian, author and curator) and Ludwig Seyfarth (art historian author and curator)

Initiated by Susanne Schuricht and Karsten Schubert

BERLIN – LOS ANGELES: SEEING AS PROCESS

Artists’ Talk with Veronika Kellndorfer and Steve Rowell
Introduction & Moderation: Drew Hammond
A cooperation with the Senate Chancellery Berlin as part of the City Partnership Berlin—Los Angeles

Monday | June 22, 2015  |  7:00 PM
Deutsche Bank KunstHalle | Unter den Linden 13/15 | 10117 Berlin

Veronika Kellndorfer is a Berlin-based artist who frequently works in Los Angeles; Steven Rowell is a Los Angeles-based artist who has lived and worked in Berlin and who returned to Berlin as Villa Aurora fellow at the Center for Art and Urbanistics (ZK/U) in 2015. Kellndorfer often integrates formal and conceptual aspects of a work by means of her emphasis on semi-transparent and semi-reflective layers inherent in her subjects—a strategy that simultaneously achieves and symbolizes this integration. Rowell’s research-based projects invariably generate tensions between their themes and the formal aspects of their revelation, an attribute that both reinforces their expressive affects, and invests them with aesthetic criteria that transcend conventional research or documentary.

Tropical Modernism

An artistic intervention by Veronika Kellndorfer as part of the exhibition - Lina Bo Bardi 100 - in the Architekturmuseum of the Museum Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.

“Tropical Modernism” reflects the open structures of Lina Bo Bardi’s architecture and transfers them into an arrangement of transparent und opaque elements.

Kellndorfer’s photograph “Tree House” taken this year in Sao Paulo at the Casa de Vidro opens her two-part intervention and is installed at the entrance of the Museum, a silk-screen print, especially created for the exhibition shows the pattern of Casa de Vidro burnt in glass. The intervention finds a concise continuity in monumental printed glass panels, each 210x210cm and built in the darkened window front of the museum. Distributed by the length of 20 meters, the four, colored and backlit silk-screen prints on glass show, the amorphous forms of the openings cut in the exposed concrete walls, the windows of the SESC Pompeia Factory, remodeled by Lina Bo Bardi.

Opening: November 13th 2014, 7pm
Exhibition duration: 11.13.2014 - 02.22.2015
