Mies’s McCormick House Revealed: New Views

A three-part exhibition curated by Barry Bergdoll and Renato Anelli. New Views will provide background, context, and visibility to the McCormick House and serve as an introduction when the McCormick House facade is revealed for the first time in over twenty years. New Views will display photographs by contemporary artists responding to reflections and transparency on the iconic glass walls designed by Mies, including works by: 

Scott Fortino, Veronika Kellndorfer, Luisa Lambri and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle

Lina Bo Bardi: Material Ideologies presents new perspectives on Bardi as an architect, designer, writer, and activist, among many other things, to engage recent interest and discourse surrounding her work. Whether tectonic or conceptual, social and political agendas are latent in Bardi’s architectural materials, a theme that informs each conference panel: from her application of concrete, to the implementation of nature in schemes, and her reuse of vernacular materials.

Veronika Kellndorfer & Antonio Ballester Moreno

While divergent in materiality, Kellndorfer and Ballester Moreno share a sensibility in their approach to the subject of Modernism as a theme in their work. Kellndorfer’s practice is centered on photographing some of the most recognized and renowned Modernist architectural spaces around the world, while Ballester Moreno’s paintings embody the Modernist emphasis on line, form, symbolism, color and process, bringing to mind early champions of the avant-garde such as Paul Klee, Joan Miró and Josef Albers.

For this exhibition, Kellndorfer presents photographs of Modernist structures by Albert Frey and Oscar Niemeyer printed on highly reflective glass panels. She primarily focuses her lens on the transparent façades of the structures, allowing the difference between the interior and exterior to play out on the surface of the glass. As a result of this process, the viewer and their surroundings are conflated on the surfaces of the works, resulting in the superimposition of image space and real space, the man-made and the natural.

biennale chicago 2017Veronika Kellndorfer participates in the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. 

The biennial Make New History will take place between September 16, 2017 and January 7, 2018. Over 100 firms and artists representing more than 20 countries around the world were selected by the 2017 Biennial Artistic Directors, Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee. The Chicago Architecture Biennial invites the public to engage with and think about architecture in new and unexpected ways, and to take part in a global discussion on the future of the field.

Veronika Kellndorfer continues her investigations into the theme of ‘Space, Urban Space as a Real Space and as Fiction‘. She presents her new suite of works, especially produced on the event of the renovation of Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, printed in large format sheets of glass.

“Kellndorfer exposes the gap between our mental image of the building and its actuality in the world today. Her photographs of the empty building at the beginning of a process of restoration present the gallery through a focus on its raw materials, where the original steel, glass, and stone coexist with the new stacks of materials waiting to be installed, and with the dust and dirt of the construction site. In her portrayal of a moment of change, with the building simultaneously unravelling and becoming, Kellndorfer offers us new ways to understand and re-construct the particular history of this body of work.”

In der Ausstellung Roberto Burle Marx, Tropische Moderne hat Veronika Kellndorfer ein Fenster der Kunsthalle geöffnet und mit einer fast fünf Meter hohen Glasarbeit versehen. Siebdruck auf Glas, basierend auf einer Photographie, die sie von Burle Marx‘ Copacabana Pflasterungen aufgenommen hat. Die Avenida Atlântica trifft auf den Berliner Boulevard Unter den Linden.

Mit der Kuratorin Tereza de Arruda spricht Veronika Kellndorfer über ihr Verhältnis zu Brasilien, der Architektur der Brasilianischen Moderne und Roberto Burle Marx.

Tropical Pattern

An artistic intervention by Veronika Kellndorfer as part of the exhibition "Roberto Burle Marx Brazilian Modernist"

Many of Burle Marx’s designs are akin to abstract art, and resonate with contemporary artworks featured in the exhibition. To illustrate the artistic influence of Burle Marx, his works enter into dialogue with works by international contemporary artists. Among them are Juan Araujo, Paloma Bosquê, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster,Veronika Kellndorfer, Luisa Lambri, Arto Lindsay, Nick Mauss and Beatriz Milhazes.

To mark the last day of the exhibition “Casa de Vidro. Lina Bo Bardi in Dialogue with Sverre Fehn” Jan Maruhn, Markus Richter and artists Veronika Kellndorfer, Michael Wesely and Knut Åsdam discuss the examination of architecture and urban structures in the visual arts.

The exhibition presents Lina Bo Bardi’s glasshouse in São Paulo, Casa de Vidro (1950–52), inside Sverre Fehn’s glass pavilion (1997–2008). It encompasses a dialogue between the architectural idioms of Bo Bardi and Fehn and the visual language of artist Veronika Kellndorfer. The National Museum commissioned the Berlin-based artist to reflect Bo Bardi’s Casa de Vidro in a new installation created especially for Fehn’s glass pavilion. Kellndorfer employs transformed and rasterized photographs of the building, which are silkscreened onto huge glass sheets, creating a representation of the house that is at once spectral and painterly.

Lina Bo Bardi’s iconic glass house in São Paulo, Casa de Vidro, is presented inside Sverre Fehn’s glass pavilion. The juxtaposition serves as a starting point for a dialogue between the two architects’ works. The exhibition features new commissioned work by Veronika Kellndorfer, which evokes Bo Bardi’s glass house using artistic means, playing with the reflectivity and transparency of its walls.

Christopher Grimes Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new works by Veronika Kellndorfer. 
This body of work stems from her 2015 solo exhibition at the Casa de Vidro in São Paulo, home of celebrated Italian-born Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi. During this time Kellndorfer also engaged with the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer and the gardens of Roberto Burle Marx, finding their approach to Brazilian Modernism nascent to a new scope of reference.

For Tropical ModernismLina Bo Bardi, Kellndorfer continues working in the process she developed in the early 1990s of silk-screening photographic images to highly reflective glass panels, fusing image to form. In the main gallery, Kellndorfer will show works pairing details of Bo Bardi’s iconic SESC Pompéia in São Paulo with an individual plant species found in the Royal Botanic Garden in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Like Bo Bardi, whose architecture explored reciprocity between the human and the built, Kellndorfer examines the dialog between the playfully Brutalist and culturally dynamic SESC Pompéia and the global selection of various plant species flourishing in Brazil. The South gallery will feature works referencing Bo Bardi’s architectural treasure: Tree House (Casa de Vidro), as well as the sculptures Casa de Vidro, Quadrado and Casa de Vidro, Triângulo.
